Remembering The Gates

Today marks the five year anniversary of the opening of “The Gates,” exhibited in Central Park in February of 2005. The art installation was the work of the recently passed Jeanne-Claude and her husband Christo, a pair responsible for some pretty amazing and often controversial large-scale art projects. I was living in New York at the time and recall “The Gates” were subject to much ridicule, most notably from Stephen Colbert on “The Daily Show” (very funny video here). Was it great art? I have no idea; I’m not much of a judge. Did it make a lick of economic sense? Probably not. But I thought it was pretty damn cool.
A couple more pictures after the jump.
