Phish 3D | In theaters April 30th
This past Halloween weekend, Phish treated close to 100,000 fortunate guests at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, California to Festival 8, a three-day jam featuring their long-standing tradition of covering an entire album by another artist during the second set on Halloween night. I was fortunate to be one of them.
The cover album choice last year was pitch perfect: The Rolling Stones’ “Exile on Main Street,” a dirty, rocking album featuring the track “Loving Cup,” which has been a favorite cover of Phish’s for more than a decade.
I’ve seen a lot of Phish shows and witnessed a number of their more special performances, including The Velvet Underground “Loaded” Halloween show in Las Vegas, Nevada, and the marathon Millennium concert in the Everglades. The Indio Halloween show ranks as one of the very best I’ve ever seen and heard.
Oddly enough the thought of seeing it in the theater in 3-D holds little interest to me. Doesn’t match being there, of course, and I’m still not convinced 3-D enhances the movie-going experience except in very rare and special circumstances. But the footage in 2-D (as evidenced by the video) looks great. And I know the soundtrack will rock. So I’ll likely be in the audience at the end of April.
